What to see around Las Vegas:

Las Vegas is a spectacle unto itself, but it's also surrounded by majestic natural and man-made wonders that look great from the air.

Black Canyon

While soaring above the awesome spectacle that is the Hoover Dam, you're also admiring the canyon in which it was built: Black Canyon. This canyon had been the proposed site for a dam for nearly 30 years before the dam project began in 1928. Until then it had been known for the black volcanic rocks that could be found there, thus leading to its name.

Grand Canyon Skywalk (Eagle Point)

Soaring in a state-of-the-art helicopter is one thing, but standing on a cantilevered bridge above the canyon is an entirely different way to get close to the canyon. Some tours land nearby for a trip to the Skywalk. For an added bonus, look for tours that let you skip the line at this popular attraction. Note that cameras and phones are not allowed on the Skywalk, though you are allowed to store them safely before heading out on the five layered glass deck.

Grand Canyon West Rim

Photo of Grand Canyon West Rim

100 miles to the east of Las Vegas, this mile-deep canyon was carved out of Arizona by the Colorado River over millions of years. Many tours stop on the canyon floor for a look around and even a meal (check the details of your tour to learn more). Some tours will also will bring you to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass-floored, cantilevered bridge that lets you stand 800 feet (240 m) above the base of the canyon.

Guano Point

Not far from the Grand Canyon Skywalk location stands the location of an immense bat cave, which once held a mining operation to extract and sell the bat guano that filled the cave. Guano Point juts out into the canyon creating an amazing and awe-inspiring place to take in the sights of Grand Canyon West.

Hoover Dam

Photo of Hoover Dam

Enjoying Las Vegas? In some ways you can thank the thousands of workers who built Hoover Dam in the 1930s, thereby supplying irrigation and hydroelectric power for much of the region. At nearly 800 feet high, this popular tourist destination attracts visitors by car, bus, and yes, helicopter!

Lake Mead

Photo of Lake Mead

When the Hoover Dam was built to tame the Colorado River, it created Lake Mead, which, depending on water levels, is at times the nation's largest reservoir. Many flights will take you directly over parts of Lake Mead as you head East toward the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. Lake Mead is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and swimming, and supplies drinking water and irrigation to surrounding farmland and communities in Nevada, Arizona, and California.

Las Vegas Strip

Las Vegas loves to light up the night sky. Many tours offer trips around the city for a birds-eye view of the glitz and glamour below. Some night flights are only 15 minutes in the air, leaving plenty of time for a night on the town afterward.
